  Miami Valley Council Training Policy:

The Boy Scouts of America National syllabus programs are developed to train leaders in the basic skills they will need in order to perform their roles as scout leaders.  They are especially designed to provide knowledge level information in New Leaders Essentials to hands-on outdoor skills training in Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, Outdoor Webelos Leader training, and Scoutmaster Outdoor Leadership Skills.  The training courses are interactive with video, PowerPoint
® slides, scenarios, and especially hands-on skills, and finally with other scout leaders as trainers.  This combination creates a positive learning environment that makes the training fun and memorable for the participants.  Starting in November 2006, all training conducted will follow the national syllabus and learning objectives in all Miami Valley Council districts.  The national syllabus will not be changed or compressed in anyway that will compromise the learning objectives of the training program.  The national syllabus along with the materials will be used for all presentations.  If the national syllabus is not followed, then those participants will not receive training cards and course completion will not be entered into ScoutNet.

BALOO, OWL, and Tour Permit Information

Cub Scout Leaders planning Cub Scout and Webelos outings... The following information is to clarify your training requirements and tour permit completion requirements:
     (1)  Cub Packs that go camping must have at least one adult attending the event that is BALOO trained.  This applies for all overnight camping other than residence camp.  One day events do not require a BALOO trained individual.
     (2)  Webelos Dens that are camping by themselves do not necessarily have to have a BALOO trained leader on the event.  It is strongly recommended that Webelos Den Leaders have completed OWL prior to taking their dens camping.  It is also suggested that that leader be BALOO trained as well but it is not mandatory that a Webelos Den Leader be BALOO trained.
     (3)  Tour permits for Packs that are camping must indicate who the BALOO trained individual is that will be attending.  Webelos Dens that are camping do not need the BALOO information on the tour permit completed.

Key Training all new leaders should have (besides your respective Fast Start training):

     Youth Protection (click here)
The Scouting program provides a safe haven for all youth in its program.  This training is essential in understanding the National Boy Scouts of America policies that relate to protecting our youth from unsafe practices and abuse.  Miami Valley Council has directed that all leaders complete this training and renew it ever other year.
     New Leader Essentials -
Is required for all new leaders and needs to be taken soon after becoming an adult leader in any capacity.
New Leader Essentials is generally taught the last Tuesday of each month at the Schiewetz Leadership Assembly Hall at Cricket Holler.  Please check the applicable calendar to confirm dates.
